Baptism in the Ocean and other pics....

Note from Mom: Here are the missing pictures from this week. When I got Courtney's email on Monday, I posted everything she had sent. Then, somehow, when I got on the computer last night (Tuesday), there were pictures she had sent the day before as well. Somehow they hadn't come in when the rest of her emails did. So here are the ones she said I could post, with my best guess at what they are. See the next post (Monday's) for a bit more explanation of it all. Meantime, thanks for sharing this experience with me and my family--

The beautiful skies over Leon, Nicaragua that Courtney has fallen in love with!!

Courtney calls the skies her "Nicaragua version of the Disney fireworks".
And we all know how much she loves the Disney fireworks!!

And the WORK continues....

Mon, September 20, 2010 7:36:30 PM
So the wedding and baptism were organization nightmares! The people that participated still walked away feeling good though which is great. We had 23 baptisms in our zone
this saturday at the beach (which was absolutely beautiful), and 7 were ours. I was so happy to see how happy they were when they came out of the water, cleansed of all their sins. There were a lot of kids screaming and playing right next to the baptisms though which was rather annoying. It amazes me how ppl can feel the spirit here even with such huge destroyers around.. for example we have taught lessons to the beats of Bad Romance and also to Justin Bieber and a boatload of other things. But still the spirit is there! Just goes to show you how powerful it is. All in all I am glad that this weekend is over - the burden of pressure and stress was huge and we didn´t realize how heavy until the day after.. we were sooooo exhausted mentally and physically by it. But this is the time when we are having the most fun! It is good going to bed knowing you have worked hard and given it your all.

My comp and I are stronger than ever and I absolutely love being her companion, even though like everyone else that spends a boatload of time together we have our own issues every now and again but they aren´t bad and we overcome them relatively easy together. I´m not looking forward to losing her on the 30th. I think that she will be switched out of Leon. I have no idea if I will stay or not. I can see the Lord testing my patience being in one area for a long amt of time (an irritant of mine - there always comes a point when I just have to get out of an area! I just get really antsy) but I could also see him switching me somewhere new for a whole new set of lessons. I have gotten comfortable here in Leon and I really love it. And I can sort of figure out how to get some places which is nice having some particle of familiarity. Also I heard we live pretty well in comparison to others. Also it is the safest city in all the mission which definitely is a plus.

Time is flying and still at the same time. It´s weird to think I´ve been here over a month, and at the same time I feel like I´ve been here forever. My anniversary was nice hahah just the same as any other day. My comp just celebrated her 6th month anniversary. By the way my spanish is coming along great. Everyone compliments my accent.. even from the first day here. However since I am opposite of most other gringos (I speak more than I understand, when usually it´s the opposite), people then think because of my vocabulary and accent that I know more spanish than I do and launch into really fast ´complicated´ stuff that I can´t make sense of hahah. It´s funny. I can pretty much understand the gyst of the things my comp says, esp in lessons. That is because I´m around her 24/7 though and have gotten more used to her accent. Nicas (that´s what you call the ppl here) drop the end of the word though when speaking often so that does complicate the whole understanding part because I am not used to that just yet. I am not fluent yet but I am improving more rapidly every day and I can see how at this rate I could become fluent.

The Lord is amazing, life is amazing, the
missionary work is great and I am treasuring the experiences. I have already gained testimonies of so many different things that I didn´t know I could gain a testimony in and I´m ever so grateful for this opportunity. I hope that I don´t bore you guys and I hope you don´t think of me as just some other emotional molly mormon missionary girl in my letters. This really is work. I am becoming a better person because of it as well, and because the testimonies of the people have affected me greatly. I´m happy to be here, I don´t care to leave, and I like constantly improving, even though there is never enough time to do all that I would wish. I love you all! God bless

Mission Conference plus...

Mon, September 13, 2010 7:47:56 PM

We just had mission conference today with Elder Don Clarke of the 70 and it was very inspiring and answered a lot of prayers and questions. I felt a rush of motivation and rededication to why I´m here and it´s almost in a way a fresh start. It is funny how often a person needs that! Remember to be an exceptional you and if you need help finding where you are or what you need, the Book of Mormon is a book of revelation! So much can be opened up to you if you only open the door. Whatever method of study is best for you, do it. It seems like there is never enough time here in the mission to do all the study that I want and feel like I need. Make use of the time that is given to you!
Our baptism this last weekend fell through cuz the mother of Christian (14) denied permission for him to be baptized. So sad.. but we respect the word of the mother. However, remember Anita who was just baptized? Her family is interested and one of her daughters will be baptized this weekend (and possibly her teenage son too). It is amazing to see the gospel work in the lives of this family. They are very excited to be sealed in a temple together one day.. and I´m excited for them as well. We have 7 baptisms lined up for this weeknd. Those 2, an older man, Juaquin y Laura (the young couple who get married on Friday!!), and a couple of tweenagers, who are just great! Their bright and smiling faces are so good to see, after some hard things theyve had to endure in their lives. I´m so happy they are here in this moment making the choices that they are cuz I know the Lord will bless them so much for the rest of their lives.
Random things about Nicaragua:
- Bottled soda is 35 cents, but if that is too expensive, you can buy it in a plastic baggie. Most people do that, and it usually comes with a straw but if not they just tear a corner and drink it that way. They actually use the bag method for a variety of things
- People that live in the concrete block houses pull their car in to their living room. Like.. there´s a ramp from the street going right on in. It is funny sometimes to see haha
- I´ve seen entire families riding on motorcyles, and many on 1 bike. It is not strange to see a guy biking, his wife sitting on the front, carrying a child.
- there´s more but I don´t have time to write about it now haha later with that
Well, the work is good, prayers are answered and things are going well, I´m alive. The weather is annoying, but the sky is absolutely beautiful more often than I ever thought possible of a sky. I loved when I was at Disney World watching the fireworks every night. Here it´s kind of like a natural version of that... the heavens sort of open and colors are everywhere and if there´s a storm aways off, you can see the lightning spark really sharp and that is reaaaaaaally pretty. AND it is so.. big here! The only other place I´ve ever seen it this big is when I was on top of a sand dune in Rexburg.
Oh hey, also, if anyone has any ideas for object lessons or EFY games or anything, please Dear Elder them to me or something! That would be a huge help - we are working on ideas for strengthening the youth here. If the youth become strong, then the country becomes strong and many more great things and opportunities will be able to come to this people.
Well.. gotta run. We´re having family home evening with some investigators. Adios!

NICARAGUA, Week 3

Just wanted to start today's entry with some more of the pictures Courtney has sent from Nicaragua. She sent a few more, but was very explicit in what could be posted here....Here are the ones she wanted us to share:

The "awesome" LDS Church building in Leon, Nicaragua

Nicaragua's beautiful sky....

Oh, yea! Frosted Flakes in Nicaragua!!

Another view of the awesome sky....

Anita (the older lady in white in the center), Courtney's first baptism that she and her companion taught from start to finish.

And now, in her words, the next installment:

Sooo.. this has been a week of firsts. I had my first sick day
confined to a bed. I had my first fast sunday. I was soaked almost
completely from head to toe (even with an umbrella!) for the first
time. I recognized areas and directions for the first time. I had my
first dream about teaching lessons. Someone asked for a pamphlet or
something to read before we had even talked about that, which is a
first for my comp too haha. For the first time, I also had to look up
a word on the spanish side because I couldn´t remember what it was in
English. And it was my first baptism for someone I´d taught from start
to finish. Her name is Anita and she is a classy lady and a wonderful
example for her children and grandchildren, who are also now
interested in the church when at first they rejected it flat out. The
Lord works in mysterious ways :) We moved the date for the beach to
the 18th, and I think right now we have dates for about 5 people to be
baptized that day, and 1
this saturday, but I´m not exactly sure.
After all, they do speak in Spanish here. Haha!

I want you to know you never know what the Lord has planned for you.
You never know what answers you´re going to get... some lessons cannot
be taught except by experience, some can´t be learned until a time of
reflection much further down the road, and others are thrown right in
your face. In times of difficulty and doubt, we must hold fast to our
faith and the testimonies we know we have, knowing that this is just
one of those trials.. and it will pass soon. We are told if we bear
with patience our afflictions we will be given success. And no trials
¨for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: Nevertheless
afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them
which are exercised (trained/disciplined) thereby¨ Heb 12:11.

The Lord only lets trials and hard things come by His children so that
we can be refined. And ¨he that refuseth instruction despiseth his own
soul¨ Prov
15:31-32. Trials never rob us of happiness and the light;
only the adversary does that, when we let him. We have the power to
crush his head. We are that we might have joy, and the Lord expects us
to have joy and happiness, even when things are dark. These things are
for our good and will give us experience. Patience is not just about
enduring; it´s about enduring well. It´s to see if we truly do love
and trust the Lord and His timinig... the active working of faith in
the process of perfection. Elder Uchtdorf said, ¨Patience means to
abide in faith, knowing that sometimes it is in the waiting rather
than in the receiving that we grow the most.¨

You can do better ALL the time. We are given weaknesses so we have
something to work on... and if we are not progressing, we are
digressing; there is no middle ground. Yes it´s a battle. Yes, it´s
hard. But it is worth it.. it is the plan of the Lord that we are
here, progressing, learning and preparing to return to Him. Not all of
life can be cake because if it was, we wouldn´t appreciate it. I think
the main reason a mission is said to be so hard is because we feel the
pressure. We know the vast importance of the work and what is
expected, however, we are human and therefore have personal
weaknesses, hurdles that we have to surpass to do it. I know that we
will never be able to be perfect here, but I also know that we can
try, and the Lord will reach our reaching.

Also if you ever get an opportunity to do something good, do it. Seek
it. What is your dream? There are so many that are denied the
opportunity and means to achieve theirs. You can. Either way you will
grow old. You might as well achieve your goals along the way. I also
promise that if what you seek is worthy and good, you exercise effort
and do your part, and you ask the Lord for help in achieving it, it
will happen. It is possible. Remember, as the song goes, ¨Fairytales
do come true, but you gotta make it happen - it all depends on you!¨

Also - shout out of FELIZ CUMPLEANOS to Cousins
Alex & Izzy and to
Grandpa B! I hope you had a MAGICAL day!

Well.. nos vemos!
Hna ´Rishin´
