Over the Hill

Mon, March 21, 2011 6:45:07 PM
I really am in a new and weird and strange chapter now in my mission. I am now `dying´ as they say.... I have passed the hill and am on the down slope! Weird! I feel like I just began like 2 months ago.. I can´t believe that a year ago I was putting in my papers and receiving my call to come here to Nicaragua. Nor can I believe that there are only 9 months left. Wow. I cannot believe it. BUT we have great goals for this next month and do i dare to say it - miracles are happening in Nicaragua right now. And I´m loving it.

We finally were able to baptize Martin this week.
He is very special to us and I even go as far as to say he is my Nica tio - my Nicaraguan uncle!
He says he is going to take a trip within the next 5 years to go visit all the missionaries that have helped him in his journey, from Honduras to El Salvador to Guatemala, Mexico, TEXAS and Utah!

Being part of his miracle has really inspired me and helped me to further realize my importance here in the mission. I feel blessed to know him. I prize our friendship a lot and have learned many things in our lessons with him. He shared his testimony with us in his baptism and told us that he knew this was the church of God, and that he knows that the Lord had brought him here to this moment. I know that miracles still exist today and that this work is the work of the Lord, who loves us.

I wanted to take a moment to talk about repentance and forgiveness. First of all, it is your responsibility to forgive others, no matter how you have been hurt, no matter how long they have done it, no matter what they did. He only forgives us of what we do if we forgive others. And as a plus, we are liberated when we forgive others. Everyone deserves a second chance... I´m not saying you should blindly trust someone when they have done something, but we have to realize that every single person we know or have heard of is fighting a hard battle. Do you have weaknesses? Do you sometimes feel weak or handicapped by them? Guarantee every person you meet has their moments in the dark. People are complex and messy, and they have agency too. That means they can make decisions that affect us. Life isn´t the way `it´s supposed to be´ - how we imagine it. It is the way that it is. It is how we move through life and handle what comes which makes the difference. It really is. The gospel that I help people understand every day introduces us to the plan/outline that the Lord has for us, what He expects of us and how to live to achieve true happiness FOREVER.

Life is simple really.. but as it’s been said it just isn´t easy. We just don´t become who we want to be overnight, or even in a few weeks! We have to hammer and forge a character for ourselves over time. We have to overcome who we are to become who we will be, and we need to help others to do it as well. Sometimes the people just need a little bit of love, real understanding, and support to be able to get up the courage to take the steps necessary. It´s not magic, so it won´t happen in an instant; patience will be required. Sometimes we take credit for being patient when we are only putting off doing something we don´t wanna do. Something we find unpleasant. You can´t just sit on the side and whine about how things aren´t changing (either in a situation or in a person), especially when you have not given anything of yourself to help bring about a positive change. `For ye know not but what they will return and repent and come unto me with full purpose of heart and I shall heal them; and ye shall be the means of bringing salvation unto them´ (3 Nephi 18:32). Just.. do something. Have you done any good in their world today? Have you helped them in their needs? People do not lack strength or talents. They lack will. The Lord has promised us that if we ask with pure intentions and faith, anything is possible.

Believe in the impossible! Every other day is another day to change everything around. Do you have a dream? A hope? Something you want to achieve? Do you feel things have been the same for so long that those things are now impossible? Well... repent. Change that perspective right now. Everything is in our power to change. Tell yourself: `I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me´(Phil 4:13). What we gotta’ remember sometimes is it just doesn´t always have a process with exact steps that guarantee almost instantaneous results. We also learn from the scriptures that not knowing what steps to take is not an excuse to not do anything. Trust in the Lord. And remember that there is always something else we can do. What more is, the Lord expects us to do all in our power. Don´t judge yourself by what you understand of your potential. `For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. I would that ye should remember, that as much as ye shall put your trust in God even so much ye shall be delivered out of your trials, and your troubles, and your afflictions, and ye shall be lifted up at the last day. `Be thou humble; and the Lord thy God shall lead thee by the hand, and give thee answer to thy prayers.´ (2 Cor. 4:17, Alma 38:5, D&C 112:10).

And so, my beloved family, friends, and fans, `let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power, and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed´ (D&C 123:17).

Alma 5:26-28, 33, 34:32

Also, my support and sincerest love go out to the Taylor family at this time, who have suffered a most beloved loss in their lives this week. I hope you can send them your prayers, withersoever you are right now. Siguen adelante!

Just a quick thought for the week--

Mon, March 14, 2011 8:10:18 PM

Don´t have a lot of time today because a friend was in dire need and so most of my email time went to them.. sorry! But I do want to tell you a thought. You don’t throw away a whole life or project or goal just because it’s gotten banged up a little. There is a lot to be accomplished in pushing through to the end and restarting and going back to the basics. Also remember that you cannot live in the future! Be present in everything you are doing. Actively endure and endure well and if you do fail, don´t be sorry. Just improve. Success is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm for the journey. It sounds a lot easier than it is, but hey, life is simple. It’s just not easy!

More updates next week!

We baptized ABRAHAM

Mon, March 7, 2011 5:20:13 PM

Hahahaha so this week we baptized Abraham.. isn’t that neat? Yea he is a pretty cool guy, he has overcome a whole lot of obstacles in his life to get where he is now. Hna. Cano and I met him one day when Jairo (remember him? He was baptized in January) took us to introduce us to his family. Abraham is his uncle. Jairo was so happy to have his uncle baptized. Jairo walks with us to help bring people to church on Sunday mornings and this Sunday morning he was so thrilled to have his uncle baptized.. He exclaimed that he was sooo happy that his family would soon all be with him there. He truly does feel the spirit in a profound way I think. Abraham bore his testimony in his baptism and said that he knows that from now until the end of his life he knows that he has an appointment every Sunday, which is pretty awesome for a missionary to hear. I am so happy that he has been able to have this thing grow and bloom within him, as lame as that sounds. There is just no other way to describe it really. Pictures will have to come next week I’m afraid because Hna. Garff has them all on her camera and I didn’t have enough time to get them today.

Just so you know, Martin was not able to be baptized this week due to the fact that he wants to be baptized with his friend but we find out tomorrow when the date will be. I hope that I can be there for it.. ! We celebrated his birthday yesterday. Because he has a room full of Disney action figures and stuff, I thought we should get him something to go with it. One day I noticed a fully functional Buzz Lightyear in the street and bought it for him ($7!) and goodness when he saw it along with all the books that we got him (including a huge big print triple and bible and other gospel library books), he was like a kid--just so happy. Also we have been able to build good relationships with a bunch of inactive folks. A lot of people just need someone to talk to sometimes. I am looking forward to have lifelong friendships with these folks.. they are really special to me.

We have also been able to start up in helping a woman build a house... and that’s mostly what we have been doing all weekend. She probably is not going to join the church but we have really enjoyed her company and helping her out. She has exclaimed to us how blessed she feels and says that God sent us here to her in this time because He knew she needed us. God works through the hands of other people. Let’s be those people!

The Work and Blessings Continue...

Mon, February 28, 2011 5:11:28 PM

To start off - just FYI, some packages of letters got lost in space and so I have to apologize to both sets of grandparents, Erica & Mark Thompson, Steph & Q Thompson, Inga & Dan Slade, Shannon & Zach Bundy, cousins Mindy, Becky and Kerri (& families), as well as Aunt Leah & fam, Jessica Mutz, Lauren Holmes, brothers Ryan & Kyle and other extended family and friends. I wrote you all letters but they are lost. It will take me time to recuperate and rewrite again but know that I love and care for you all and I did write back. You just won’t get them. Because the mail system hates me. BUT please write to me soon--I want to hear from you all! Entonces... on with business....

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOMMMMMMMMA LA QUIERO MUCHO!!!!!!!!!!!!
My mom is the greatest. And I know everyone says that, but it is always true.

We are going to celebrate with a special baptism! Of a man named Martin who has changed my life and perspective of missionary work. He was taught before by elders, but when the elders were taken out of the area for sisters to come in, his paperwork was lost and so the visits suddenly ceased. He wondered what happened and why they didn´t return but we showed up and picked up where the elders left off (they are now in the south mission of Nicaragua). We have been working with him about 2.5 months or something. His wife died a long time ago but he is still in love with her and so you can imagine how the plan of salvation and sealings in the temple have affected him. I am very excited to be able to participate in his miracle.. really in the mission we don´t create or perform miracles or anything like that, we only put hands to the Lord´s work - we are just participants in something much more grand than ourselves. It is amazing.

I am learning a lot right now personally... including how to get my life even more in line the way it needs to be. Tengo que hechar y limpiar y organizar a todo! En cada forma! Pues.. Remember that you can make the difference even if your past was different, even if you didn´t have examples to learn from. We make the difference in every minute. Make changes now in your own life so the future can be better for everyone. If the gospel doesn´t exist to solve problems and become better people then what is it good for?
